The 2013 Legislative Session has ended. We now have to turn our focus the 2014 Election Season. It is important for us to begin building the necessary relationships within our community to make the Labor community stronger. CLCs, Locals, and union members must have a focused goal of electing Labor-friendly candidates at all levels of government. We have to expand our vision from the statehouse to city halls and courthouses. It is only with a coordinated push that we will be able to positively affect upcoming elections.

The AFT and First Book—a nonprofit that has distributed more than 90 million new books to children across the United States—have joined forces with New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) to help encourage a culture of reading for low-income and middle-class students.

This video features AFT’s team-up with First Book to place books in the homes of the children of Freeport, N.Y., a community devastated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Union Poster Rule Struck Down By Appeals Court

In another blow to the nation's dwindling labor unions, an appeals court on Tuesday struck down a federal rule that would have required millions of businesses to put up posters informing workers of their right to form a union.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia said the National Labor Relations Board violated employers' free speech rights in in trying to force them to display the posters or face charges of committing an unfair labor practice.
